Strabo was at work some two thousand years ago, in the early days of the Roman empire. His Geography is a description of the cultural and geo-political world of that time, as well as an account of how the physical world was then perceived.

Strabo focuses on how the world of the political present emerged from the world of the political past. His interests resonate with an audience asking the same questions at the start of the third millennium.

The map, representing Strabo’s conceptualisation of the northern hemisphere, was drawn by Gossellin in 1805-19 to accompany the French translation of Strabo’s Geography by Laporte du Theil, Korais and Letronne, undertaken at the request of the French emperor, Napoleon.

You can read Strabo online, in English, in an early 20th century translation (also partially available here). The eight print volumes of this translation (which also include the Greek text) can be downloaded in PDF -- vol.1, vol. 5, vol. 6, vol. 7, and vol. 8.

You can read Strabo online, in Greek, here, based on a print edition of 1852-53. In print, this edition occupied three volumes, of which vols 1-2 are available as e-books.

You can also read Strabo online, in English, in an earlier mid-19th century translation. The three print volumes of this translation are available as e-books – vol. 1, vol. 2, and vol. 3.

The two print volumes of a different, 1852 edition are available as e-books -- vol. 1 and vol.2.  An earlier, 1844-52 edition occupied three volumes, of which vol. 1 and vol.3 are available as e-books.
